APPX III

19   At 1100 hrs we received orders from 4 ARMD BDE to send our OPs to tie up with COMMANDO immediately as the whole op had been put fwd. The COMMAND crossed the river without oppositions and we were not call upon to fire at all.
Our own OP officers crossed with COMMANDOS, but there were no Germans on the Island only one remained. He joined A Coy 2/60 KRRC, whio have relieved COMMANDOS. This morning on the orders of HQ RA, Major W G Harris, MC, RHA and Captain J L Kayvett, RHA were send to 4 RHA when they will if necessary engage targets using this regiment. Tonight we are firing HR programme.
20   This afternoon we participated in a fire plan in sp of 8 HUSSARS and our shooting was controlled by Major W G Harris, who was operating with them. The AOP had two shoots this afternoon on two hostile btys and succeed in silencing them. Captain J E Hoyle, RHA, who had own OP at the lock at 693829, also had several shoots during the day at small parties of enemy. WE engaged quite a few U and V targets during the day and also this evening. Last light a premature occurred on a gun inn F Bty RHA which seriously injured two gunners and wrecked the gun.
21   Last night and throughout today we have engaged targets, both at the request of HQ RA 11 ARMD DIV and also Major W G Harris. Eary morning we engaged again the same fire plan as yesterday in sp of 8 HUSSARS, who are experiencing still opposition. Tonight we are engaged on a HF programme,
22   Today we have done much shooting, but tonight are again engaged pm a HF programme. With effect from today Major F J A Hanjey, RHA assumes comd of  the regiment in the absence of Lt, Colonel L J Livingstone-Learmouth, MC, RHA, on leave in the UK. This morning we received a warning order to be prepared to send  Tp command and tank to join Major W G Harris, MC, RHA,  At 1500 hrs confirmation of this was received and Capt H J . Baillieu RHA, was sent. We also received a warning order to be prepared to relieve 180 FD REGT who are sp 6 AIRBIORNE DIV to our North, Tomorrow we are sending a rep to contact  relevant date from 180 FD REGT in case we should relieve them.
23   Late last night orders were received from HQ RA for Major P J A Hankey, RHA another BC, and two other OP officers to be sent to join 7 ARMD DIV this morning for a special job. This proved to be direct sp of No.1 SS BDE and our OPs are operating  with Nos. 3. 6, and 45 Commando, and Major Hankey is establishing a Tac HQ at Bde HQ. We have done a lot of shooting today, incl two fire plans in sp of the Commandos. We also fired numerous M targets, several on mortars, one at a tank, and several to assist the Commandos out of a sticky corner. At the request of our OPS we also fired 72 and 61 MED REGTS at hostile mortar. Tonight we are awaiting receipt of another fire plan for tomorrow ad as comms are bad we set up an intermediate wireless station at MAESEYCK. Tonoght we are harassing the town of LINNE very frequently, for the Commandos are being mortared from this area. This afternoon F Bty RHA had another premature, but fortunately no one was hurt. Both prematures occurred within the pieces and it seems they are due to faulty ammunitions.
24   Late last night Major W G Harris, MC, RHA, arrived, beginning his fire plan which we engaged this morning at 0815/ Thiswas laird on the support the Commandos who indentation was to secure the outer defences of LINNE. In addition to ourselves two other Fd Regts and 2 Med Regts were deployed. Major Harris also instructed C Bty to send out a gub to destroy the Church tow in LINNE, which is a suspect OP. This proved unnecessary, for it was blown up by the enemy this morning. During the day we fired several regtl targets and also employed a Medium Regt to shoot up suspected mortar areas. At 1715 hrs we engaged another small fire plan in sp of the Commandos, who have succeeded in taking their objectives.
25   Late last night we again received from our Tac HQ a fire plan, which we duly engaged at 0745 hrs. Once again, in addition to ourselves, we employed 2 Med Regts and 3 Fd Regts, This fire plan was to assist the Commando to take LINNE, which they duly did. As we are at rather extreme range, Major F J A Hankey, RHA instructed Major A H D Varrow, MC. RHA, to recce new gun areas in the THORN and PANHEEL aera. This was done and the new posns surveyed. Major Hankey returned today and he decided that F Bty RHA should have a posn in the PANHEEL area, Therefore tomorrow a posn is to be recce'd there, Major Hankey visited HQ RA to give them the form about recent ops. Tonight we have at call as small fire plan which will be engaged only if the Commandos, who are sending out a fighting patrol, are in trouble.
26   Today a fresh posn fopr F Bty RHA was found an surveyed in the PANHEEL area. These new posns will not be occupied if we are to move to support 6 AIRBORNE Div. At the moment it is uncertain or not we will continue to sp the Commandos or move North. Tonight we are expecting to engaged a fire plan to sp the Commandos in an attacked upon the island in sq 7485 and 7484. This, however, had been cancelled.
27   As we could still retain no definite ino regarding our future, Major F J A Hankey RHA decided to move the Btys to their new area. Accordingly, moving one at a time, the Btys came into action as follows :- C Bty RHA in 6886 ; F Bty RHA in sq 7086 ' and DD Bty RHA 7087. F Bty RHA OP officers were relieved today by DD Bty RHA officers, We engaged quite a few targets today, including a suspect enemy HQ, which we numbered several times. Tonight we have another fire plan to call, employing a Med and a Fd Regiment in addition to ourselves. The fire plan is in sp of the Commandos who are attempting to clear this island. Today we received a message of congratulations from CRA 7 ARMD DIV :- " The Did Comd haa asked me to tell you now delighted we Comd 1 SS Bde is with teh magnificent support your regiment has given his people from the moment they arrived (,), Will you please let all ranks know this ".
28   Last night we fired only a part of the fire pan as the Commandos withdrew having had a sharpe encounter with the enemy in wbich both sides suffered fairly heavy casualties. We have not done very much large-scale shooting today, most of the targets being engaged by a Bty or Tp. Tonight we are engaged upon a HF programme on suspected mortar locations,
29   During last night the Commandos posns were subjected to heavy mortar bombardment. We engaged certain suspected posns and also stood on our DF SOS Task as it was thought an enemy patrol had penetrated the Commandos defences. In view of this activity, Major F J A Hankey, RHA, established CN Office at his Tac HQ and positioned OPs so as to gain as many bgs as possible, Al shellreps and mortar reps are based back to this office which, as soon as it gains an intersection from bearings, will pass the info back to us and we shall engage the area. This afternoon the Commandos sent out another patrol and we had at call a number of targets to be engaged on the orders of the OP officer who went with them. However, they met no opposition and we were therefore not called on to shoot for them. Tonight we are harassing suspected mortar posns and also employing 72 M<ED REGT RA on similar tasks. In addition we have engaged areas obtained by the intersection of bgs to the sound of mortars firing and also tow targets att the request of HQ RA 11 ARMD DIV.
30   Today we have done very little firing, taking past in only two divisional concentrations and engaging three regtl targets. 59 HY REGT RA engaged the suspected enemy HQ today, its firing being controlled by Captain J E Hoyle, RHA, The shoot was every effective and it seems that the building is severely damaged, having been subjected to stonks from Fd, Med and Hy arty, Late this afternoon we engaged two suspected mortar areas on the "island", when enemy mvt has beam seen.
31   Last night 7 ARMD DIV intercepted a wireless transmission requesting that tpt be sent to the area of the cot HQ we have been stonking. .On this info we harassed that area at irregular intervals throughout the day. This afternoon we fired a small fire plan in support of anoth patrol of the COMMANDOS and 8 HUSSARS, but aparte from the harassing fire and the fire plan we have done very little shooting. Late morning DD Bty RHA were relieved by C Bty RHA. This evening we learnt from Major W G Harris, MC, RHA that he and the other OPs are probably being relieved tomorrow. This was confirmed later by the HQRA 11 ARMD DIV. He could, not tell us, however,, what the future has in store for use.

NOTES : During JANUARY Captain P W E Curried, RHA of C Bty RHA, carried out experiments with GREYS and 44 RTR in the use of tanks in an arty role. He co-operated with the officers in formulating a drill for deployment and for laying the tanks in a ?/re line. The guns are laid by director method, angles being passed to each tank. It was decided that it is impracticable to use tanks on DF tasks as they do not attain the required degree of accuracy. The trails led to the conclusion that if observed shooting is not possible it is advisable to use tanks on areas tgts and at a safe distance from our own troops.
Doing the month we were affected by scheme SPARK. On 7 Jan we had to post for transfer to in 31 ORs,and the men eligible included some pre-dating NCOs and efficient ORs, The scheme came as a disagreeable surprise,

005406  1   Last night we engaged another fire plan in sp of 159 BDE, It was decided, in view of the success of 159 BDR, that GREYS and KSLI should advance and capture high ground area 050375, after which 44 RTR and 2/60 KRRC will pass through them and secure area 0637 overlooking SONSBECK. The regt will move between the two operations. Greys are due to commence their attack at 0700 hrs tomorrow. The CO laid on with the COs of the four regts fireplans to cover the two attacks. At 0442 we were informed by BDE that their would be no move before first light and that we may move at 0930 hrs. Recce parties went forward and selected gun positions in  sqs 0140 and 0041. The CO attended a conference at 0800 hrs and the plan was changed. Fresh fire plans, incl three smoke screens, were laid on and we were told to move when we were ready and that the move must be completed by 1200 hrs.
This we did and deployed in positions already selected. The positions proved to be rather forward and, when the mist lifted, the regt was in view. The attack did not develop until late in the afternoon. At 1804 hrs we fired teh first smoke screen and this was repeated 35 mins later, During the evening we engaged several more targets and also a fire plan at 2225 hrs to enable the GREYS to reach their objectives. Todatm Lt CRA Wire, RA and Lt Miller, RA, joined the regt. Both have attended a conversion course from RA AA to RA Fd and are to be attached to the regt of three months' experience.
2   Throughout the night we engaged numerous targets in support of both battle gps. This morning a fire plan consisting of two smoke screens and four HE tasks was laid in in sp of GREYS but only the HE tasks were required. At 1400 hrs we engaged another fire plan in sp of B Sqn GREYS. The advance continued during the afternoon and OPs called for several regtl targets and Bty and Tp targets. Bt 2030 hrs 2/60 KRRC had cleared their onjective and will remain there until relieved by CDNS.
3   Last night was quiet, as the BDE had reached their objectives and our only tasks were DFs which were not required. This afternoon we received two fire plans in sp of CDNS, but it is not yet known when they will be required. Throughout the day we have done very little shooting. On orders from HQ RA we sent an officer to contact CRE who wanted a small smoke screen to cover a working party. This, however, did not materialise as the work was eventually done under cover of darkness. This evening and until 0500 hrs we were employing one Bty on HF tasks allotted to us by HQ RA.
4   Again, a very quite night, our only targets being three V targets which were engaged just before midnight. At 1700 hrs we engaged the first fire plan in sp of the CDNS, The evening we were given orders by CRA what our recce parries must be prepared as from 0730 hrs tomorrow to go fwd and choose gun areas in sq 3036 or just East of SONSBECK.

This morning the 2 i/c went fwd to recce suiitable gun area near SONSBECK, but was recalled when HQ RA informed us that we should probably not move. This afternoon it appeared we should be moving tomorrow, so recce party went out. Late this evening HQ RA informed us that we should not now move to SONS BECK, but we are to move at approx 1400 hrs tomorrow to joing 2 CDN CORPS, taking with us the LAA Tp which have been attached since we entered GERMANY. The CO instructed recce parties to remain in SONSBECK area for the night and go to the new area at first light tomorrow. 070396  7   The reg moved at 1430 hrs and deployed in sqs 0639 and 0640. Recce parties had great difficulty in finding suitable posns as the whole area was crowded with all types of arty. Our RHQ was in the FDLs and completely overlooked. In view of this the CO ordered an officer to be i/c the Guard, which was doubled, and all available automatic weapons were sited to cover all approaches. The CO went to see CRA 2 CDN DIV and we learnt that our job is to fire two smoke screens before rejoining 4 ARMD BDE. Capt PWE Currie, RHA, is with CDNS and will be responsible for controlling teh smoke screens. This evening a fire plan arrived. Our task is to fire 5 HE concs and 3 smoke screens. The attack is to begin at 0530 hrsand by midday our task should be completed. This evening we received a Movement Order from 4 ARMD BDE, but it is doubtful whether we shall be able to move with them,
8   This morning we completed teh HE tasks and two of the smoke screens, but owing to the stiff oppositions it does not seem likely that thirst smoke screen will be wanted before late evening or tomorrow. During last night we received a Mvt Order from 11 ARMD DIV which stated we are to send reps on to NIJMEGEN, as the regt will stage the night there. Capt. A.A, Banks, MC, RHA, was sent this morning, with a small party to get suitable accn in NIJMEGEN.   14   Maintenance continue today. We have now completed painting of vehs in the regiment.
15   This afternoon the Adj (Capt G K Stott, RHA) attended a security conference at 4 ARMD BDE HQ and while he was there a message arrived stating that the regiment will move on 21 June to area of Kiel. This means we shall pass from under comd 4 ARMD BDE on 15 June and come under comd 7 ARMD DIV until 21 June, when we shall move and come under comd KIEL BDE AREA. Tomorrow Major Cook will go to Keil to meet Brig. A.C. Matthews, ODE, DSO Commander of KIEL BDE AREA, Our recce parties in ROTHKAMP area have been instructed to proceed to Kiel tomorrow, to meet Major Cook and to be shown the new areas.
16   This evening, when Major Cook retuned we learnt that the new area os rather bade from an accommodatoon point of view. RHQ and DD Bty RHA are to share a Camp SOUTH of KIEL ; C Bty RHA was to occupy a hutted camp WEST of KIEL (sq 089387) ; and F Bty will be in some houses SE of KIEL (sq 258559)/ There is no also lack of furniture and the Camas are extremely dirty. Major AHD Barrow, MC, RHA, is going to the new area tomorrow to supervise the preparation of the accommodation. Our commitments in this area will be rather heavy, our chief job being the supply of guards in the dock area,
17   This morning a BCs' conference was held and each Bty allotted the guard commitments. C Bty RHA have too take over certain guards on 20 June.
18   This afternoon the Adj went to Bde to take over all documents relative to the Bde area, which we shell hand over to unit relieveing us.
19   Today 4 ARMD BDE moved out of this area and the regiment came under comd 7 ARMD DIV. We are going to be relieved by 21 A-Tk Regt RA. The 2 i/c of that regiment viosited us today and advance parties will arrive tomorrow. This morning CRA 7 ARMD DIV visited the regiment.
20   This morning teh advance party of 21 A=Tk Regt RA arrived and we handed over to them the area and all relative documents.
21   Today the regiment moved at 1000 hrs and arriived at Kiel at 1500 hrs. The advance parties have done a great work and have cleaned up the areas. This is still a lot to be doe and there is a lacj of furniture, particularly in C Bty's Camp. APPX I
Today had been spent in settling in and organizing our billets, etc. Our guard commitments are rather heavy, as that men will be doing 24 hrs on guard and 24 hrs off. We are also responsible for certain DP Camps in the area. Our dutiesin this respect are cleanliness, administration of DP entertainment and DP quarters, C Bty RHA are having difficulties in theri area with stagnant water, which appears to be seeping up from the drains. Application has been made toe KBA to repair teh drainage system and to pump away the water.
23-30   This period was spent in cleaning and improving our billets. To assist ins tack we have had German PW, whom we collect each morning from WIK BARRACKS. Organised spot has been rather difficult within the regiment, owing to our heavy guard commitments. However,, football and cricket games have been organised on all possible occasions, but the regiment has to rely upon borrowing cricket kit from Keil Bde Area, as our efforts to procure new kit have met with no success.
