Rumours of impending Italian attack.

10/9/40

This day 3rd RHA were disposed as follows :-

RHQ - SALLUM area ‘M’ BTY HQ and one tp BIR HUH

1 tp D BTY – BUQBUQ area One tp MADDALENA

“ “ “ - SALLUM “ “ “ East of SIDI OMAR

1 Section “ - forward SALLUM area

One tp ‘D’ BTY under Cmd M. ) West of

One section HQ SUPPORT GROUP ) HELFAYA.

In general one troop ‘D’ and HQ, we're supporting KRRC, one troop COLDSTREAM GUARDS; ‘M’ BTY was supporting RIFLE BDE with detached troop with company KRRC that MADDALENA.

Col. CAMPBELL at HQ, 4th RHA was commanding artillery under SUPPORT GROUP with Major YATES as A/TK advisor.

11/9/40

Large masses of MET were located at several positions on the frontier.

In the evening one troop ‘C’ BTY went forward with the escort of troop ‘M’ BTY why and a squadron of 1st RTR. As soon as they were in position a report was received at 400 MET we're approaching them already across the wire. This turned out to be a false report, but caused the order SLIM to be given, Col. CAMPBELL commanding the column disregarded the order SLIM, disposed troop of Bofors under Capt HOBBS to Northern flank, and carried out a shoot on a large laager of enemy MET in area SIDI OMAR.

The evening SUPPORT GROUP decided to withdraw that observation line to line HELFAYA- BIR EL KHRAIGAT - KHAMRA- MADDALENA.

12/9/40

A.M.

SUPPORT GROUP withdrew this morning, SUPPORT GROUP HQ moving to WADI EL MAQTA 536356. Forward coys of RB withdrew slightly to this line. This there was no change on Northern flank, where COLDSTREAM Guard held their ground.

P.M.

A column similar to that employed on previous was formed but did not get into action this day owing to MT difficulties.

13/9/40

The newly formed column came into action about 0300 hrs when a large enemy laager of 700 MET in the vicinity of SHEFERZEN area was surprised. A dense fog came down within 3 mins of opening fire, so that results could not be judged. The 28 mile return march in the fog took over 8 hours.

Early in the morning section 25/26 BTY engaged targets in MUSAID and aerodrome area with considerable effect. Then came an Italian advance after an artillery barrage estimated at least 2 DIVISIONS of artillery.

The COLDSTREAM GUARDS retired at about 1400 hrs not having been heavily engaged except for SANGA O.P. Post, which fired 75 Bren magazines at infantry at a range of about 800 yds. The O.P. received several direct hits, and was hit by a heavy salvo of bombs 10 seconds after it had been evacuated. Only one man was he was wounded.

A troop ‘C’ BTY under GOSCHEN had some good shooting at enemy trying to get down escarpment. ‘D’ BTY HQ move with KRRC 2 centre of BUQ BUQ - SOFOAFI line about midday. RB with ‘M’ BTY stayed in advanced positions until night 13/14, when nearly all the troops South of Escarpment retired towards SOFOAFI. Troop ‘M’ BTY SIDI OMAR with Cop RBs was attacked by fighters and bombers, and fired few rounds at lorries on the wire. Lorries stopped. Section D BTY at BIR NUM was subject to heavy dive bombing attack.

This section was in position HAL DUN 50 yds apart . 7 planes came from SALLUM and flew over information about 2000 ft. They turned round, broke formation and then dived one after the other, coming to a height of about 100 ft. They were back several times for about 5 mins in all, machine gunning and dropping small bombs. They were single engined monoplanes. One pilot waved at a man after he had completed his dive. The section replied with Bren and rifle fire those without ammo took shelter in the water. There were no casualties.

14/9/40

One cruiser tank salvaged.

Enemy air activity was intense during the day.

KHREIGET, HAMRA and SIDI OMAR patrol being among the places bombed.

RHQ moved back to ABU EL DRIN when COLDSTREAM GUARDS retired to BUQ BUQ position.

15/9/40

RHQ moved to RABIA.

During the day any tax came along coastal Road. They were made with lorrie borne infantry, who suffered terrible casualties from fire of ‘C’ BTY RHA. Targets being described as being better than anything experienced in Great War 1918 - 1918.

South of escarpment main enemy action during the day was the from the air. The 11th Hussars at SHEFERSON were machine gunned, and a company of the RBs KAMAR were bombed several times. In the evening formations of four or five enemy bombers bombed SOFAFI area. “B” Echelon RBs suffered casualties

On the coast the BUQ BUQ position was only evacuated when 25 pdrs had fired all the ammunition. When ammunition was running low the enemy attack was stopped completely buy a mixture of smoke and a HE.

During the night SUPPORT GROUP, HQ RB, withdrew to area BIR ENBA. 2 RBs and troop ‘C’ BTY and ‘M’ BTY withdrew to area BIR ENBA 3rd COLDSTREAM GUARDS, and attached troops to ALUM HAMID positions before dark.

1st K.R.R.C. together with some guns of ‘C’ BTY and ‘M’ BTY guarded SOFAFI pass and escarpment eastward from enemy penetration from the North.

BIR ENBA

16/9/40

R.H.Q. was moved during the night from RABIA to area 10 miles East of BIR ENBA.

The main attack on coastal area developed about 1000 hrs, earlier what time day before. By this time ten guns of ‘F’ BTY had been brought up to reinforce our northern column. The most astonishing shooting was carried out this day, and 4th HRA completely checked all mechanical columns as well as big infantry attacks. Casualties properly amounted to between 500 and 1000.

Information received was more accurate this day as complete regiment 11 HUSSARS was under command SUPPORT GROUP.

SUPPORT GROUP HQ and Divisional RASC second line was heavily bombed about 1200 hrs, causing about 10 casualties.

Several Operation Orders were issued this day, but the last was finally cancelled when 50 enemy tanks got too far round flank of northern column and caused whole SUPPORT GROUP to withdrawal about 1530 hrs.

17/9/40

RHQ moved during the night back to BIR KENAYIS. Reminder SUPPORT GROUP withdrew to approximate line of 650 grid line, but enemy continued to press on past SIDI BARRANI. There was a marked slackening of enemy air activity this day.

This was the last and about the worst day of Kharseem weather.

MIRRLEES arrived RHQ having missed withdrawal going to leave. He preceded up to forward troops immediately.

18/9/40

Support Group concentrated in morning in area KENAYIS - GELLAZ- KHALDA.

‘D’ and ‘M’ BTYS both arrived intact except for two vehicles which had been abandoned in the withdrawal.

BLACKBURN B.C. “D” BTY: JENNINGS D.V. ‘J’ BTY: HEWAN G.E. “M” BTY

BLOMEFIELD W.E. ‘P’ BTY.

Butler lunched with ‘J’ BTY and had tea with ‘P’ Bty after attending tank hunting demonstrations organised by 4th IND. DIV.

Lieut (QM) MESSENGER arrived at ‘P’ BTY on his way to CAIRO, having been wired for from RHQ.

BUTLER went to FORCE HQ to find out the reason for this and to investigate fresh signal announcing arrival of four more officers.

MESSENGER is detailed for staff appointment at G.H.Q., MIDDLE EAST. The four officers were those who had already arrived.

HEWAN and BLACKBURN departed for RHQ. BUTLER staying the night with “P” BTY, as well as three newly joined officers of 4th RHA who had not known where to get of the train. “P” BTY have been invaluable in putting up drafts and leave parties.

During the day it was decided that COWAN should go temporarily as Brigade Major to MIRRLEES at H.Q., 4th IND. DIV until a new staff officer could be procured off the present HAIFA course.

SMITH is been promoted Captain and will command ‘J’ for the next five weeks.

The tank hunting demonstration is most impressive, the smoke bomb alone forcing, the crew to stop and leave their tank. The officer in charge and Sergeant Major assisting in this demonstration had fought on opposite sides in the Spanish Civil War.

J and P BTYS are still engaged in digging gun positions on the BAGUSH line with ‘J’ support 16th INF. BDE and ‘P’ 14th INF. BDE. The divisional 18 pdrs are under command that command as in the NAGUSMISH position.

GENERAL.

29.9.40

On leaving the Regiment I wish to thank all ranks for giving me the happiest year of my life. It has been a real pleasured to command such as happy family and the loyal cooperation of officers and other ranks has made by task a very easy one.

We have gone through some difficult time together during the last 12 months and personally I have learned more about soldering in those months that in all the rest of my service. I only hope you have had the same experience.

I wish the best of luck under your new commander who is a personal friend.

Finally dont forget that the Germans have won their victory with tanks. The Italians will no doubt try the same tactic here. You fold the key to their defeat.

Dear Colonel

I am sorry to have been unable to let you know anything of our activities since being detached from the Regt., but we arrived in somaliland just in time to be urgently required and since them have has a continual round of action and travel.

I have command of 6 Breda guns, 1 Naval 3 pdr and later 2 Bofors.  The crews consisted of our three N.C.O’s, four Indians three africans and six Black Watch, and later four Gunners from “P” who took over the Bofors. Unfortunately we lost the naval gun and crew, four Breda guns and one Black Watch

In a later action Gnrs Kelly an Porter did great work accounting for 2 Medium and 2 Lights, there were then ordered to retire and manhandle two guns through about five miles to the portee. We were unable to get the Portee’s aboard but managed to get the guns away. We then went to Aden. Four days later we were ordered to the Sudan and on arrival joined up with Charles Groves and his section, they been cruising the Red Sea for about three weeks.

At Khartoum every effort was made to make us up to a complete troop, and with two 15 cwts in place of the portee we are now functions very well again. We were inspected by the Governor General who took a great interest in us the day before going forward.

We had a bit of action on the 10th but unfortunately no targets presented themselves although we came in for quite a bit of Artillery fire we had no casualties, in fact the chaps in the troop are in good health and spirit.

Owning to the bad state of the mens clothing and being unable to Procure overalls, we had an issue of shorts and puttees as I was advised this was suitable the climate.

I have been duly informed  Bert Messenger of this and forwarded all vouchers and 108’s to him.

I’m afraid I have put more information in this letter than is allowed so am taking the liberty of sending it in the official mail.

Wishing the Regt the very lest of luck and good shooting in their present location.

              I remain
              Your Obedient Servant

Lt. W Burlingham

LETTER from No. 860133 – Bdr. Howie, J.G.

to Captain W.P. HOBBS on 14.9.40

Excuse me for writing to you in this manner, but thought you mighty like to know how I am faring.

The course that I was sent on did not materialise, instead, we were shipped to British Somaliland. It was here I had my first taste of war.

We landed at Berbera, where I was given an Italian “Breda Gun”. Within five hours of receiving this, I was in action seventy miles in the interior. With me were three Indians who like myself, had never even heard of this gun, the could not speak English.

After three hectic days a Captain of the Rhodesian Artillery, who incidentally had the very guns our battery had in Palestine, came up and told me to disband the gun and take over a machine gun post in the front line. We were here for two days, during which there was no rest as we were heavily pressed at all times.

Here, our left flank, was completely wiped out, which led to our being partially surrounded. We then received the order to evacuate. From here we set out to march thirty miles, after walking about twenty of these we met the trucks which had been sent out for use. We arrived once again at Berbera, early in the morning, and got abroad set sail for Aden about midday. We stayed here for three days, then received orders to proceed to the Sudan. Here we joined a section of “P” Battery and immediately left for the front.

Remember I used to crib about M Battery. Well roll on the time when I rejoin the lads again.

I hope the battery is keeping its good name and wish it the best of luck.

                Please excuse scribble and pencil.
