5

0815

Flotilla moves up and puts out to sea. Regt. due to arrive in France at D-Day second tide, after 50 Div. have made the assault the morning of D Day.

At Sea.

6

At Sea. Sea choppy; few cases of slight sickness.

7

Regt. landed on beaches at Hable-de-Heurat. One “Firefly” and a CS were lost by drowning. Owing to weather conditions and shipping congestion landing was not completed until 15.00 hours.

Tanks still under the packet commanders proceeded to the concentration area, most of the de-waterproofing being done en route.
Here could be seen the effects of the successful advance of 50 Div. and Naval Gun barrage. The Regt. concentrated in the area just south of Sommervieu and was organised as fast as possible so as to meet expected enemy attack.

Sommervieu

8

“A” Sqn. under Comd. of Major Macdonald were called upon to support 56 Brigade in clearing pocket of enemy resistance in the Sully area, 7683, who were situated in the Chateau there. Heavy sniping was first experienced here. The country proved to be very close in this area allowing Boche infantry to get very close to the tanks.

On one occasion a tank under comd. of Lt. Garnett was boarded, prompt action by the officer using a Sten gun and his operator a revolver saved the situation. A lot of trouble was caused by an enemy SP gun working its way into “A” Sqn. positions in Sully village and succeeded in knocking out one Firefly. Even at this stage it was becoming very clear that fighting ranges would be extremely short, upwards of 50 yards.
“B” Sqn. under command of Major Thomson was sent north to support the Commandos in their advance out of Port-en-Bessin and to consolidate positions. Here much sniping and close range tactics were again encountered. “B” Sqn. returned to Regtl. leaguer area at night. “A” Sqn. remained out in Vaux-sur-in area for one night.
At this stage it is worth mentioning that very good shoot was done against the Chateau in Sully, only marred by the fact that during the withdrawal for the night under cover of smoke, the only exit was a narrow bridge and the Sherman belonging to the OP of the 5 RHA hit the bridge and fell over the side killing Capt. Noble, M.C.
      Losses:-
Personnel – Own: Killed, Cpl. Davison, Tpr. Walker, Tpr. Jones, Wounded:- Cpl. Fisher, Lt. Wilde.
Tanks: 1 Firefly, 1 CS Cromwell, (by mortar bomb).
      Enemy:- 4 – 88 mm guns, 1 75 mm gun, 1 20 mm SP, 1 Opel Car, 1 75 mm SP damaged.

9

“A” Sqn. return to Regt. leaguer. “C” Sqn. leave to take up a position at Mornirel as close support to 50 Div. in that area where they leaguered that night.

The remainder of the Regt. carried out maintenance during the day.
1730 CO attended conference at Brigade, subject: Future operations.

10

0630

Brigade move forward with the intention of capturing the high ground between Hottot and Juguigny passing through the FDLs of 50 Div. south of Bayeux, the Regt. being on the right flank.

Owing to the close country the Regt. moved one up with “C” Sqn. (Major Burt) leading. Progress was very slow.
Lt. Haywood at Folliot found himself near a small enemy leaguer where he put out of action a Mark IV before having to withdraw. “B” Sqn. were then ordered to try and find a gap on the right flank.
The village of Bernieres Bocage was ultimately nearly surrounded but an SP gun thought to be a Panther knocked out 2 Cromwells. Meanwhile 4 CLY had reached Buccels on the centre line and forward elements were reported in Tilly sur Seulles though this was thought doubtful. The Regt. then leaguered in the Ellon area for the night.
Losses: Tanks, own – 2 Cromwells.
Personnel killed:- Lt. D.I. Grahame-Parker, L/C Perry Tprs. Walker, Harris, Langford, Tutheridge, and White, N.
Wounded:- Sgt. Cook, Missing – Tprs. Chorley, Lynch, O’Callaghan.

Ellon.

11

0430

The Regt. broke leaguer at first light and moved forward towards the Tilly – Balleroy main road in an attempt to cut the road and so push on to the original objectives. The village of Bernieres Boccage was reported clear by recce; this information proved to be incorrect as enemy infantry were still in nearby woods. Recce’s leading tank was KO’d by an SP gun about a mile further on.

Meanwhile one Coy. of the Essex Regt. occupied the village. The Regt. then moved on across country, “A” Sqn. leading under command Major Macdonald. The large open space between Folliot and Lingevres was crossed by “A” Sqn. On reaching the woods near Lingevres enemy tanks opened up and two Cromwells and a Firefly were KO’d. “A” Sqn. in co-operation with 1 Platoon, “I” Coy.
1 RB was ordered to proceed south through the woods to Lingevres. Good progress was made up to about 300 yards when rifle sections who had got too far ahead of tank support were ambushed and suffered a few casualties. At this stage “A” Sqn. halted, “B” Sqn. took up a position on the right, “C” Sqn. taking position on high ground in the rear. It was impossible to get through the wood.
Lt. Heynes was on the right flank of “A” Sqn. close to the road and was suddenly hit by a presumed Mark V tank which crept up along a sunken road unobserved. German Inf. undoubtedly reported his position to the Mark V. Two members of his crew were killed, L/Cpl. Day managed to escape although his leg was shattered. He was later picked up.
The “A” tank of this troop commanded by Sgt. Hill was also hit by the same gun almost immediately afterwards killing two of his crew. That evening the Essex put in an attack on the wood 8070. The objective was taken and although attacked by two Mark IV Flame throwers they succeeded in knocking one out with a PIAT gun and their position remained intact. .
That night the Regt. leaguered in the area Folliot
      Losses:-
      Own - 1 Firefly, 2 Cromwells, 2 Honeys.
Killed:- Cpl. Bridge, Tprs. Holton, Carter, Richardson, Haw, Hornsby, Musson, L/Cpl. Morrissey. Wounded:- L/Cpl. Hay, Day.

Folliot.

12

0430

Regt. took up defensive positions on the high ground until the afternoon when the Brigade was ordered to carry out a flanking move and to capture the high ground SE of Villers-Bocage.

Excellent progress was made and the Regt. leaguered at La Moulotiere having met with no enemy opposition.

13

0500

Advance resumed with 4 CLY leading and elements of 131 Brigade were left behind to form a firm base. All went well until one Sqn. 4 CLY had passed through Villers – Bocage.

Their HQ was than attacked by Mark VI tanks causing considerable damage. It now became clear that the 2nd SS Panzer Div. was in the area and the 5 RTR immediately took up positions on the high ground east of the village Amay-sur-Seulles. Again the country was very close and as the enemy attacked it was clear that his Inf. were employed as eyes for the tanks.
They advanced; drew our fire and then returned to point out our locations to the tank commanders who dealt with the targets. Fighting of this nature carried on throughout the day. The Regt. leaguered for the night in “Squadron boxes” 4 CLY, 11 and 8 H formed a close Brigade leaguer, 131 Brigade forming an outer perimeter.
      Losses:- Own - 4 tanks.
Enemy - 1 Mark IV. Losses:- Own :- Wounded – Lt. Haywood, Sgt. Fishwick, Tpr. Larner.

Amay sur Seulles

14

The day was quiet Regt. being on the defensive and strengthened their positions all round. Towards evening a strong enemy attack was launched and this was thrown back with considerable losses to the enemy, official figures unknown but estimated losses were 8 tanks destroyed and approximately 500 Infantry. RAF using Rocket bombs attack Villers-Bocage.

At 23.00 hours the Brigade was ordered to withdraw to area La Moulotiere as the left flank was far too exposed, destroying all equipment which dropped out en route. This was done under a cover of a heavy bombing attack on the enemy positions.
After travelling all night the Regt. leaguered at La Moulotiere at 06.00 hours on the 15th being the last unit to leave the battle area.
Losses – own - Killed SSM Ramage.

CAUMOT

1

B Sqn was placed under comd of 1/6 Queens and C Sqn under 1/5 Queens, A Sqn being in reserve.

0900 Bde attacked from area Benneville MR 7554, 1/5 queens Group left directed on Breuil, 1/6 Queens Group right directed on Manpied 7651.
All went well but 1/5 Queens found themselves unable to establish themselves on the Breuil feature. It was decided to pass 1 RTR through who, although suffering casualties succeeded in forcing the enemy to withdraw.

2

Regt switched to comd of 22 Armd Bde and a further plan made to attack the Breuil feature with the 1/6 Queens and then to pass the Regt through directed on to Aunay-sur-Odon.

RHQ was one mile south of Cahanges and after a quick exchange of fire mostly from A Sqn, 37 POWs were collected from nearby hedgerows.
      Casualties:
      Cfn Tedder (LAD) - wounded.
      Enemy - 37 POWs.

CAHAMGES

3

At first light the Regt left the area 7455 and passing through the 1/6 Queens made for the high ground at Pt 138 8151 which overlooked the Aunay-Villiers road. A Sqn almost immediately overran 40 POWs.

A fairly heavy mist which had persisted, lifted (0830) and when it had been hoped that it would be a cover from the high ground in the south, none existed and the Regt was under observation the rest of the day.
A Sqn made very good progress towards Pt 138 as far as La Lande and Courcelles.
C Sqn was protecting the left flank and were stationary in a position 400 yds S of St Georges de l’Aunay. Both squadrons having contacted the enemy, 3 Tp in A Sqn in La Lande got the better of a head-on encounter with a Mk IV, but enemy inf forced them to withdraw from the rlwy bridge. 4 Tp reached Pt 138 where they commenced shelling the road. The enemy reacted quickly by heavy and accurate shelling on 4 Tp’s position. AP was also reported.
1130 B Sqn passed through A with the intention of recapturing Pt 138 and deal with any opposition there.
    1300

Enemy opposition in La Lande had increased considerably and several tks were seen and engaged. 3 Tp A Sqn KO’d 2 Mk IVs for the loss of 2 Cromwells, despite the fact that one tk had a broken cocking lever on the 75 mm gun at a range of 200 yds.

2 Tp followed with an action against 3 Mk IVs and 1 Mk V at a range of 1000 yds. 1 Cromwell was lost, also a Challenger who through lack of opportunity had not been able to T&A sights with a result that all three shots fired missed.

RHQ remained with 1/6 Queens with whom no supporting plans had been made as this was considered a firm base and it appeared to be a case of Armour looking after itself and getting established 1½ miles E of the Queens’ FDLs. As all moves were under observation, the effect of a sudden attack with concentrated gun and mortar fire against the A/Tk screen of 1/6 Queens was to KO 50% of them.
Following the bombardment, a sudden counter-attack by the enemy Bn strength supported by 6 tanks from Bassieux had the effect of overrunning two Coys of the Queens and cutting off A and B Sqns from RHQ.
Meanwhile2 or 3 enemy tks together with infantry opened up on C Sqn, from the area St Georges and 5 more tks attacked A and B Sqns inflicting casualties, who then made for the only cover available at 805520 with the intention of making one complete squadron of the two.

Meanwhile, C Sqn and RHQ got into position to support 1/6 Queens RHQ and so prevent them being overrun, at the same time covering the area S of St Georges. The attack was stopped 800-1500 yds short of the 1/6 RHQ and a strong point made out of the tks and inf.

A Sqn of 8 Hussars came up and took over the front S of St Georges.
The enemy now had reinforced the ring round A and B Sqns, though one tp had been extricated by means of a smoke screen and rejoined RHQ

Several attempts to break through were frustrated before dark, but during darkness after leaguer had been attacked by bazookas,

Maj Macdonald gave the order to break out and make for the W. 9 tks out of the 12 succeeded in rejoining RHQ, Maj Thomson being wounded.
