ALWARD HOUSE,

26

The Bn. moved off in fine weather on the first stage of the WO exercise to be carried out on the move to the new billeting area. The move was carried out successfully despite the weather conditions which included rain, snow and hail as well as the cold.

ALDERBURY, Nr. SALISBURY.     The unit reached its day harbouring area and from there was ordered to proceed direct to close billets in the Streatley area. A rear party consisting of four officers and 40 other ranks was left at HARPENDEN..

27

0515

The Bn. moved off on the second stage of the exercise. The weather was extremely bad – pouring rain and a bitterly cold wind. In spite of these adverse circumstances the Bn. kept up to schedule for reporting times and all the “A” vehicles ran extremely well – the standard of driving being excellent.

1315 The unit arrived in its new area. The GE and his staff had not carried out their work in the billets with the result that the men arrived wet through and cold and were unable to get any hot water, also there was no light or water in the billets.

28

Today was spent settling in to the new area but owing to the state of the roads – completely ice bound – it was very difficult to get any communication other than by telephone.

The DCRE was asked to come and inspect the state of the billets and as the CE was unobtainable little could be done in the way of putting right the billets.

30

The roads remain a sheet of ice and road travel has become extremely dangerous and difficult. Maj. Willison and the IO spent the day looking for more accommodation in Salisbury but facilities for billeting in the town are almost non existent. Sqns. are settling into their billets and the CE is getting the water, blackout and sanitation situation in hand.

31

The CO and the 2nd in command, accompanied the Bde. Comd. on a tour of the Bn. billeting area. The Brig. expressed dissatisfaction with some of the billets.

The IO was again looking for billets and called upon the Town Clerk for any information with regard to public buildings or vacant rooms in the same that might be available. A general thaw set in today.
