APPENDIX "B" TO WAR DIARY FOR MAY 1942.

Special Operation to Bir Hachiem 30 - 31 May 1942.

30th May.
On arrival at Pt 151 385386, at 1745 CO gave orders for all available tanks in "A" Sqn to move as fast as possible south of Hachiem, and to take up a position west of the gap that the enemy had made in the minefield about 5 miles north of the fort. This gap was reported to be filled with MET moving west. Sqn to be in position at first light and cause as many casualties as possible.
Six Stuarts were available for this operation. Commanders were Capt Stoward, Lt Lyon-Williams, Sgt Broadbent, Cpl Atkinson and Sgt Black - one ammunition lorry and two petrol lorries accompanied the party. Information of our minefields south of Hachiem was very hazy, so party set a course for a point one mile south of Hachiem where a gap would be sought. At 1900 hrs a few vehicles moving very fast were seen - one was caught and 15 Italian prisoners taken. Capt Stoward went back with one tank which was pulling badly, the ammunition lorry and the prisoners. The rest leaguered as night fell just short of the minefield.

31st May.
0545 hrs. Moved off and struck minefield in about 5 minutes. Found gaps and passed through. On sighting Bir Hachiem, patrol of Bren carriers approached to within 1500 yds of party and then returned to fort. Party then shelled by Free French until out of range some 7 miles NW of fort.
0645 hrs. Sighted approx 500 MET in minefield gap. There was no movement. The ground was fairly hilly, rising from the minefield to its highest point about 3000 yds west of the gap. Moved to this position out of sight of the gap and picked up a lorry belonging to Ariete Div which was moving west. At the top of the feature round a very conveniently shaped depression, in which the whole party could be concealed, and at the same time giving 3000 yds visibility in all directions except south. This position was due west of the gap and was cut by a very well-defined track running E & W. the first movement reported was a column of about 10 vehicles, a replenishing column, loaded with petrol and ammunition, which walked straight into the party and on sighting gave themselves up. One motorcyclist unfortunately escaped.
0900 hrs. Still no movement from the east. Another large column reported from the west consisting of 25 vehicles accompanied by 2 arm'd cars which brought up the rear. Column again loaded with petrol ammunition and food, surrendered. Acs fought, one was brewed up, and the other although chased for 3 miles escaped. The Free French then took a hand - one lorry had been hit by MG and fallen out 2000 yds away. The crew had walked in. suddenly a minute car appeared, dashed up to this lorry, set fire to it and disappeared to the south - definitely Free French co-operation. Further trickles of vehicles came in during the rest of the morning until the bag rose to about 60 vehicles of all descriptions. 12 officers and 200 Ors. The brew-ups would undoubtedly be attracting attention, so efforts were made to form up the convoy. This was made difficult by the fact that on capture all ranks had dismounted, thrown off all their clothes, put on clean underclothing and taken what belongings they wanted, had all congregated together. Further, when put on their vehicles, insisted on driving in line ahead.
1230 hrs. Convoy at last got on move as 3 tanks Mk III appeared 3000 yds to NW. still no movement from gap. Convoy moved south. About a dozen vehicles broke down or wouldn't start. And had to be brewed up. Long range 37 mm fire kept tanks at a distance. Shelled by Free French again south of the Fort, convoy broke up, but own arm'd cars appeared on scene and helped to round them up. Convoy handed over to RBs.
                1325 hrs. Party rejoined Bn.
