SPECIAL ORDER OF THE DAY

BY

LT GEN A R GODWIN-AUSTEN CB OBE MC,

 COMMANDER 13 CORPS.

On handing over command of 13 Corps to General Gott I wish to offer more gratitude than I can express to those who have so loyally served me during my tenure of command.

All troops under my command have invariably fought with the highest courage and wherever they have met the enemy have either driven him from his positions or, if outclassed by him in mechanical means, inflicted serious loss upon him.

The fact that a temporary withdrawal has been necessary is entirely due to the enemy having been reinforced with tanks of a more efficient type than our own.   These tanks we shall, therefore, fight and destroy from positions chosen by us and protected by minefields.

With the courage with which you have met and defeated him before, you will defeat him again.

I am proud and honoured to have had you under my command. am proud to feel that I am handing over so stout a command to General Gott whom I know you will serve as loyally.

Sgd A R Godwin-Austen Lt Gen, Commander, 13 Corps

APPENDIX  SIX

Special Order of the Day by General Sir Claude J E Auchinleck, DCIE, CB, CSI, DSO, OBE

COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE MIDDLE EAST FORCES

You have fought hard and continuously for over a month.  No throops could have fought better. You have had heavy losses and in spite of your efforts you have experienced the disappointment of giving ground before an enemy who had heavy losses. His units are much reduced in strength and he is a long way from his bases of supply.

The situation now calls for a supreme effort on the part of us all. We’re fighting the battle of Egypt, a battle in which the enemy must be destroyed. You have shown that you can stick it and I know that you will stick it right out until he can stand it no longer. Until he cracks the enemy must be given no rest He must be attacked and buried wherever you find him. The battle is not over yet and will not be over until we have defeated him, and defeat him we will.

Firstly, B sqn to return to regiment from 7 Motor Bde, and regiment then to go further back for complete refit. Secondly, regiment as it is at present to go further back and form nucleus of a new 1 RTR leaving all tank crews and transport with drivers to reinforce other units. Thirdly, RHQ, A and C sqns equipped with Stuarts to join B sqn operating in the desert south of El Alamein. It seems most probable, and it is hoped, that it will be the latter as B sqn cannot be relieved of their present role and the splitting up of the regiment is undesirable. I wish to record my appreciation of the splendid work done by Capt. Forster and his party whilst under my command.

They did all the tasks I asked of them and more. No task was too difficult and no day too long. They had several engagements, which were successful as a result of the splendid leadership of their commander Capt. Forster.

The keenness and dash displayed by the squadron was outstanding.

SPECIAL ORDER OF THE DAY

Behind El Alamein

To all ranks Eighth Army from CinC 25 July 42

You have done well. You have turned a retreat into a firm stand and stopped the enemy on the threshold of Egypt. You have done more. You have wrenched the initiative from him by sheer guts and hard fighting and put HIM on the defensive in these last weeks.

He has lost heavily and is short of men, ammunition, petrol and other things. He is trying desperately to bring these over to Africa but the Navy and the Air Force are after his ships.

You have borne much but I ask you for more. We must not slacken. If we can stick it we will break him.

STICK TO IT.

(b) 22 Armd Bde Gp is an Army Reserve and may be required to operate under 13 or 30 Corps.

(c) NZ Div are extending their minefield eastwards from Pt 93 (881269) to approx 886269.

(d) 7 Motor Bde are laying a thin minefield from Pt 93 to area 876265 and thence to Pt 116 (879258).

  1. Tasks. The tasks of 22 Armd Bde Gp are:

(a) to counter-attack any successful breakthrough by the enemy north of 270 Northing Grid.

(b) to hold and repel any enemy thrust east or north-east from south of the 268 Northing Grid.

(c) to attack in flank any enemy forces moving eastwards in the Himeimat area-Deir el Risw ([illegible] area).

  1. Of these tasks it is considered that 3(b) is the most likely. It is one for which least warning could be given. For task 3(a) the enemy has to break through a strongly held front, and for task 3(c) the enemy has a greater distance to go. For these reasons the area north and north-west of Pt 77 (433873) has been selected as the lying-up area for the Bde.
  1. The enemy, to carry out their action given in 1(b) (ii) above, has two alternative lines of advance. First, to attack eastwards along the good going immediately south of Pt 93 (881879), then swinging north-east to Pt 102 (428882). Second, to attack north-east between Deir Munassib (88326) and Deir el Ragil (427868).

The Greys, operating with a column of 7 Motor Bde and thereby securing artillery support, is given the task of stopping the first of these advances. 22 Armd Bde Gp will wither support the Greys should the main enemy thrust be on their front, or take up battle positions somewhere between Deir Ragil-Deir Muha Fid, for the latter the best positions are available between 886263-890260.

6   Recces. Recces in the following order of priority will be carried out by COs with the Bde Comd. Recces for (a) and (b) below, will be carried out at 0700hrs 3 Aug 42 RV Pt 102.

(a) Battle positions astride the line Pt 102-881265 facing west.

(b) Battle positions in area 886263-890260 facing south-west.

(c) Line of approach to, and general area Deir el Risw.

(d) A suitable line of march to undertake counter-attack in the north.

  1. Readiness. 22 Armd Bde Gp will be at 30mins notice from Stand To at 0730hrs and from l630hrs to l930hrs. Otherwise at 4 hours notice. This cancels 22 Armd Bde OO No 13.
  1. 22 Armd Bde Gp will be prepared to carry out tasks wef 0530hrs 3 Aug 42.
  1. Greys will come under comd 7 Motor Bde from 0530hrs 3 Aug
  2. One coy 1 RB will revert to battalion command at same hour and will move to join Bn under Bn commander's orders. H Bty 2 Regt RHA will come under command OC 1 Regt REA from same hour and will move to join 1 Regt RHA under regt comds orders.
  1. ADM. Instructions for adm Greys will be issued separately.
  1. Intercom. LOs with W/T comn will be attd by 22 Armd Bde Gp to HQ 13 and 30 Corps from 0530hrs 3 Aug 42.

0830 C sqn left regimental area to exploit the success of B sqn yesterday in the same area and to observe enemy movement in the vicinity of Marsa Brega. C sqn during the early afternoon pushed on about 121 miles from B sqn limit of advance of yesterday. Heavy calibre artillery fire encountered in this area.
1600 On a request for identifications from the gun positions engaged by B sqn 26.11.42 one tank of C sqn was detached to search this area. On arrival in this area the tank commander (Sgt Dunnett) dismounted with one OR to make the search on foot but after proceeding towards the position a few yards Sgt Dunnett was hit in the back and his companion killed. It is thought that the enemy on vacating this position had laid booby traps. In this area was one 2-pdr derelict, the remains of an ammo carrier and a gun pit which bore marks of direct hits by HE. Wheel marks of a gun were seen leading away from the position; therefore it is likely that the 88 mm was recovered though badly damaged.

Appendix 2 - Congratulatory Messages - From Army Commander to Div Commander 7 Armd Div

"I would like you to tell the 7 Armd Div from me that I am quite delighted with the way in which it has carried out the operations it has been engaged on since it was launched in the breakthrough on 2nd November. The Division has done magnificently. It has shown the whole Army how to fight the pursuit battle, how to worry a retreating enemy and generally how to fight the mobile battle in desert areas and in Jebel country.

"I would be grateful if you will tell all your officers and men that I am very pleased indeed with the way they have worked, and congratulate all ranks from me on a very fine show"

Sgd D L Montgomery General

From Div Commander 7 Armd Div to Brigade Commdr 22 Armd Bde

"I am enclosing a letter I have received from the Army Commdr which I should be glad if you will have read on parade at the first convenient opportunity to all officers and other ranks under your command.

"The success achieved by the Div has been due to the united efforts of all ranks and to the fine fighting tradition and spirit which has always pervaded this Division, not forgetting the Admin Services, whose great endeavours made it possible for the fighting troops to carry out the pursuit. I wish to add my congratulations to those of the Army Commdr.

"I also wish to take this opportunity to say how very sorry I am that the 22 Armd Bde are now leaving the Div., and to wish them the very best of good luck. I have been deeply impressed by the skill and energy of all Commdrs and men in the Bde, and by the excellent spirit of comradeship and co-operation which pervades all units and ranks. I only hope we shall have the opportunity of fighting together again."

Sgd. R F Harding Majo rGen

From Bde Commdr 22 Armd Bde to all Commanding Officers of the Brigade:

"In forwarding the attached letters from the Army Commander and Div Commander I can only add how grateful I am to the excellent co-operation of all ranks in the Bde, which was alone responsible for the success we achieved."

Sgd G P B Roberts, Brigadier.
